Their tendency to join gangs (of other fatherless boys) is an unconscious attempt to find another father figure for guidance and direction on the path to manhood.
At the Chiron Centre (Liverpool), we explore ways to work with anger in a safe environment. The tools we use are basic listening skills (unconditional regard, congruence and empathy), counselling, mindfulness, attention to our lifestyle (i.e. avoiding things that promote aggression) and therapeutic activities like gardening and wrestling.

What we focus on grows. Everywhere one looks in our culture, through Hollywood, violence, crime and pornography are glamorized: on television, in cinemas, on DVDs, the internet, and within computer games. With these themes on display continuously, it is little wonder that boys grow up wanting to emulate their glamorous and violent heroes.
Without the active support of conscious adult men, boys are more likely to stumble towards adulthood like the blind leading the blind. Many do not make it (they die), or end up on the streets, addicted and caught in the revolving doors of prisons and psychiatric hospitals (a wasted life).
Men are the least able to express themselves verbally. Therefore one solution is to teach men and boys how to express aggression nonverbally and safely. Useful examples of how violence is used are the following illustrations by the Duluth Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (Manhood by Steve Biddulph):
Most projects that involve men accused of domestic violence tend to fail. These projects come about with the intervention of the courts, not due to free will. Whilst many men will go through the motions of getting treatment for their anger issues, many do so in order to maintain access to their partners and families. However, after a period, most tend to go back to acting violently, because the root cause of their anger issues have not been dealt with.
Taming the tiger of violence has to involve the clients" active free will, a supportive male community to offer mentorship on how to handle explosive emotions, and the daily tools of spiritual wellbeing.
